Naptime Music

I am compiling a list of songs to play while the boys are taking their afternoon nap. It seems like that time of the days is just begging for some acoustic-ish, soft melodies. Well, I’ve decided to fill that void. This is the list I have so far, although I know it could stand some more stuff, and I would love some suggestions - things I haven’t really heard before and all. Also, I haven’t arranged the songs perfectly yet. Chad has a knack for that sort of thing so I’ll leave it to him. ALSO, a few of the songs may or may not stay on the list- I haven’t fully decided, which is why I need help!

Fields of Gold- Eva Cassidy
El Shaddai- Amy Grant (probably the ONLY song of hers that I like anymore)
Nightingale- Norah Jones
The Nearness of You- Ella and Louis
They Say it’s Spring- Erin McKeown
Nothin’- Chris Rice
Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)- John Lennon
Something in the Way She Moves- James Taylor
Ab’s song- Iron and Wine
More Than Words- Extreme (I dunno about this one)
Lullaby- Billy Joel

Yeah, so, suggestions. Bring ‘em on!

Blowing a Virtual Raspberry

If it were up to those people who make up the “how to be pregnant the right way” rules, I would not eat anything that I really like, and I would live in empire waisted shirts. Well, I say, PHOOEY to all that!! I will too eat sushi and soft cheese and deli meat and tuna and all the gosh darn fruit that I gosh darn want!!! And I will find some other article of clothing that doesn’t tie into a bow in the back. Not that I’m anti-bows or anti-empire waists, but sometimes when I look in my closet for something stylish/comfortable, I feel like I am left with a choice of one, the other, or a combination of the two. Also, I think it’s safe to say that when it comes to clothing at this point in pregnancy, wearing clothes sucks in general. Nothing fits right. Grrr.

Anyway, this is a message to any silly headed know-it-all who wants to tell me that everything I eat could potentially kill me. I don’t have a food taster. I’ll just have to take my chances, and I just spent much too long trying to find something to wear around the house. So poo on you!

(end of rant)

Captain Destructo Strikes Again

Lara has left her twos behind. She no longer kicks, screams, punches and scratches when she doesn't get her way. She has moved on. Now she is 3. Her new phase is characterized by destruction. Every day for the last week we have had some major mishap. Today she cut a big chunk of her own yellow tresses off of the top of her head. I think her new nickname will be Spike. Yesterday she grabbed hold of a pencil and wrote all over the walls which were newly cleaned of crayon (that Magic Eraser is really awesome!). Last week she found a bottle of yellow acrylic paint, opened it in her room during "naptime", and poured it all over the floor, fingerpainting her limbs a lovely shade of maize. It was reminiscent of the jaundice during the first days of her life. Still haven't gotten it out of the rug. She broke the pull strings on the blinds in her room, and I have no idea how to fix them. I have removed and washed her sheets at least twice in the last week because she got marker all over them (thanks to Grampa Chris for the ultra-washable Crayolas! They seriously washed right out). She also colored her arms blue the other morning while I wasn't looking. (Also came right off in the bath- the water turned instantly blue). I keep thinking I've removed the problem, but she keeps finding things in places I didn't look. Now the door to our room has been locked, and it will remain so, and everything potentially destructive will go in there until she is 18.

We are putting her in preschool 2 days a week starting in September. I figure the tuition should make up for the cost of the household items she won't break during those hours in the morning.

Where The BLOG Have I Been?

Oh, here and there, but not so much here… apparently.

Just a quick update, things are going well. Orion is giving his best shot at walking, but believe me, I am in no hurry to have to keep up with two runners. We can save that hilarity for when I have to WADDLE after two runners. Sage is attempting more phrases, the big one right now being, “I DI-IT!” (I DID IT!). The other gem is definitely “Geh-Gi-Go?” (Where’d it go?). We use that one for lost binkies (will I ever be able to wean him? I don’t know), among other things. We have a crab apple tree right next door to us and our neighbor has given us permission to take some. Well, it’s a bit high up for easy grabbing, but generally the ones that fall down are good for eating which makes Sage the happiest kid alive. He loves ‘em. Yechk, says I. I am still in the beginning stages of potty training. It’s pretty frustrating. I just can’t seem to time things right, and Sage ALWAYS pees as soon as he gets in the bathtub. (The cheerios thing doesn’t really interest him, by the way. Everyone and their mom has told me to try it.) I’ve even tried putting him in the tub, and then taking him out to set him on the potty. No luck. *sigh* I’m sure he’ll be a happy little potty-training graduate soon enough.

Here’s a fun story. Once a week/every two weeks, Chad gets together with a friend for an early morning breakfast which they jokingly call their “midnight snack.” This guy has to be at work super early, and it’s hard for he and Chad to hang out so, at FOUR a.m. they will meet up at I.H.O.P or some other ungodly place that is open at that time and have breakfast.

So, it had been a month since their last midnight snack and Chad forgot to tell me that he was going. So, I woke up in the morning at 4:30 and Chad was not there. I got up to see if he was asleep on the futon. Nope. Boy’s room? Nope. Went for a walk after having a bad dream? Still nope. The car. Was. Gone. My brain looked something like this:

Whereishewhywouldhetakethecareat430amdidhejustneedtogetawaywhydidntheleavemeaNOTE
whenwasheplanningoncomingbackohgoodlordIwishhewouldhaveleftmeaNOTEmaybeIshouldjust
gobacktosleepNOIcantwhydontIjustcallhim….yeah….OK.

The phone conversation went something like this:

Chad: What are you doing awake?
Me: What are you doing GONE? (it was at this point that I realized that I MAY have let my early-morning-half-conscious state get the better of me)
Chad: It’s midnight snack. Troy’s about to leave so I’ll be home soon. Love you!
Me: *stutter* Oh. Right. I forg…I’ll see you soon... loveyoutoo.

He was afraid that I was about to accuse him of trying to “pick up loose women.” Nah, that thought didn’t really cross my mind (maybe for the nanoest of nano seconds, but those don’t count). Usually, tired+confused+without husband or note of husband’s whereabouts= panic attack. But I’m OK now. So is Chad. The last thing he asked me before we both fell asleep was “can I still get into my side of the bed?” Haha!

Perhaps I’ll write a more meaningful post in the days to come, as I had initially meant to. For now, tired+delicious sleepy rainy weather= I have nothing very intelligent to say.

Insulin, Shminsulin

I just wanted to say that I finally heard back about my glucose test, and it was negative. No gestational diabetes this time!!! YAY!!! (Caryn, because I know you are wondering, my number was 103)

That is all. At least that I have time for right now.
